MOUNT VERNON – Cornell quarterback Juan Flores is among 51 seniors from 25 Division III schools selected to compete for Team Stars & Stripes in the fifth annual Tazòn de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) on Dec. 21 in Monterrey, Mexico.
The all-star football team of NCAA non-scholarship student-athletes will face Mexico's CONADEIP All-Stars in the 36,000-seat Estadio Tecnològico on the Tec de Monterrey campus. Kickoff is 1 p.m. (Iowa time).
Colleges and universities represented on Team Stars & Stripes roster include Augustana, Buena Vista, Central, Coe, Cornell, DePauw, Elmhurst, Endicott, Grinnell, Grove City, Kalamazoo, Kenyon, Lake Forest, Lawrence, Loras, MacMurray, Ohio Northern, Pacific, Rhodes, Rose Hulman, St. Norbert, Susquehanna, UW-Stout, Utica and Wartburg.
Flores is one of three quarterbacks on the roster, joining Lawrence's Luke Barthelmess and Rose Hulman's Ryan Landwehr. The last Cornell player to compete in the Bowl of the Stars (formerly the Aztec Bowl) was offensive lineman Jeff North in 2011.
Flores completed 186-of-281 passes for 2,070 yards and 13 touchdowns during his senior season. The Alta Loma, Calif., native set a school record by completing 66.2 percent of his throws. Flores also rushed for 695 yards and 11 touchdowns. He ran for 207 yards in the finale at Grinnell, establishing a Midwest Conference single-game record for rushing yards by a quarterback.
Flores has his name on a plethora of program records. He finished as Cornell's career leader in total offense (9,109 yards), passing yards (7,346), pass completions (636), pass attempts (1,016) and completion percentage (62.6). Flores accounted for 68 career touchdowns, including 45 passing.
Flores, named Honorable Mention All-MWC, guided the Rams to a 7-3 overall record. The team tied for second place in the MWC with a 7-2 mark.
