MADISON, Wis. – Cornell came away with consolation doubles champions in Flight 1 and 3 at the Midwest Conference Women's Tennis Championships Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Center.
The Rams finished seventh in the final team standings with 21 points. Scores were accumulated from the team, singles and doubles results over the three-day tournament.
Cornell's No. 1 team of junior Ariana Hudson and freshman Shashanna Moll defeated Monmouth, 8-3, in the consolation final. The Ram tandem fell 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 to Beloit in the first round, but regrouped with an 8-2 victory over Knox in the consolation semifinals.
Hudson and Moll concluded a strong fall season 16-7 as partners.
In the No. 3 doubles flight, freshman Anne Seng and sophomore Heather Schrauth finished the tournament 2-1 with a 9-8 (7-3) victory over Illinois College in their consolation finals match. They lost 6-3, 6-1 in the first round to Beloit, before recording an 8-2 consolation win over Knox.
Seng and Schrauth improved to 9-12.
Veronika Reidel and Dana Dowell went 1-1 in the No. 2 doubles flight. They won their first-round match, 6-3, 6-1, over Ripon, but then were shut out in the quarterfinals against Lake Forest.
Hudson (No. 1), Seng (No. 3), Schrauth (No. 5) and Reidel (No. 6) all won first-round bouts and finished 1-1 Sunday in their respective singles flights. Schrauth lost her quarterfinal match, 6-2, 6-2, to eventual champion Marisa Guggenheim of Lake Forest.
Hudson finished the fall 10-10 in singles play. She carries a 76-45 career overall mark into the nontraditional spring campaign.
